Chigger bites appear as clusters of small, intensely itchy red papules, most often in skin folds, around the ears, and on the ankles and feet. The mites that cause them are the six-legged larval stage of trombiculid mites, and they do not burrow into skin or suck blood.

A chigger is the larval form of a trombiculid mite. The larva is tiny, roughly the size of a pinhead, and it has six legs. Adults and nymphs have eight legs and do not bite. Only the larva is parasitic [1].

Colors vary by species. Some larvae are bright orange or red, which is why they are sometimes called "red bugs." Others are pale yellow or nearly translucent. Several genera are involved in animal and human disease, including Neotrombicula, Leptotrombidium, Eutrombicula, Ericotrombidium, and Neoschoengastia [2][3][4][5].

Unfed larvae are difficult to see with the naked eye. They cluster in low vegetation, on soil, and in shaded, moist microhabitats. The dominant species at one Japanese study site was Leptotrombidium intermedium at 72.4 percent of soil samples, followed by L. pallidum at 8.3 percent and Neotrombicula nagayoi at 8.1 percent [2]. That distribution matters because different species have different host preferences and seasonal activity.

Once a larva attaches and begins feeding, it can become visible as a tiny orange or red dot on the skin. In animals with heavy infestations, dozens of these dots may sit in a cluster. In a wild tree frog, orange trombiculid mites were found inside small domed vesicular lesions on the back [6]. In red-legged partridges, crater-like skin lesions often contained multiple orange mites [4].

The Six-Legged Larva Is the Only Biting Stage

The trombiculid life cycle has four stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Only the larva is ectoparasitic [1]. After feeding, the larva drops off the host, molts into a nymph, and eventually becomes a free-living adult that feeds on arthropod eggs or small soil organisms. Adults and nymphs never bite pets or people.

This is the single most important fact for anyone searching chigger bite pics. The mite on your dog is a larva. It will leave on its own.

Chiggers Do Not Burrow and Do Not Suck Blood

Chiggers do not burrow into skin. They do not suck blood. They attach to the skin surface, pierce the outer layer, and feed on extracellular fluid and dissolved tissue [7]. While feeding, they inject digestive enzymes that break down skin cells and trigger an immune reaction. That reaction, not a burrowed mite, is what causes the itching.

The feeding tube a larva creates is called a stylostome. In a study of wild red-legged partridges, stylostomes were readily identified inside necrotic skin lesions [4]. The stylostome is a protein and tissue structure formed at the bite site. It stays behind after the mite detaches and can keep the skin inflamed for days.

Because chiggers do not burrow, remedies that promise to "suffocate" a buried mite do not work. Nail polish, petroleum jelly, and alcohol applied to a bite do not kill anything. The mite is already gone or will drop off shortly.

What Chigger Bites Look Like on Pets

Chigger bites on dogs and cats look like small red bumps, often in clusters. The lesions can progress from erythematous papules to crusted or nodular skin. Distribution follows where the mite contacts skin.

Common locations in animals include:

  • Skin folds of the face and around the eyes. In Peruvian alpacas, chiggers were found only in the face skin folds and around the eyes, and every infested animal had alopecia and dermatitis in those zones [3].
  • Ear margins and ear canals.
  • Interdigital spaces and feet. In three dogs in Portugal, pruritic lesions appeared on the ventral body and interdigital spaces [8].
  • Perineum, tail base, and distal limbs. In Jersey cows, lesions appeared on the jaws, dewlap, perineum, and distal limbs [9].
  • Dorsal head and trunk in some species. Straelensia cynotis causes firm, pale nodules on the dorsal head and trunk, and these nodules do not itch [10].

The appearance depends on the mite species and the host. Neotrombicula autumnalis causes classic itchy dermatitis in dogs, cats, and people in Europe [11]. Ericotrombidium ibericense caused extensive alopecic lesions and pruritus in a cat [5]. Leptotrombidium subquadratum caused severe itching and dermatitis in both dogs and children in South Africa [12].

One important exception is Neotrombicula inopinata. In nine hunting dogs in Spain, this species was associated with systemic illness including vomiting, anorexia, weakness, lethargy, diarrhea, and stupor, but it did not seem to cause dermatitis [13]. The clinical picture was fast-acting and potentially fatal. This is a reminder that not every chigger infestation looks like an itchy rash.

What Chigger Bites Look Like on People

On human skin, chigger bites appear as small, red, raised papules. They itch intensely, often more than the size of the bump would suggest. Because larvae tend to attach where clothing fits snugly or skin folds overlap, bites cluster around the ankles, behind the knees, in the groin, under the arms, and at the waistband.

Repeated exposure can make reactions worse. In one case report, a man bitten by Neotrombicula nagayoi initially had mild pruritus without pain, but over successive years the reactions increased to severe pruritus with pain [2]. That pattern is consistent with an acquired hypersensitivity to mite salivary proteins.

Why Chigger Bites Itch So Much

The itch comes from the digestive enzymes in the larva's saliva. These enzymes break down skin tissue so the mite can feed on the resulting fluid. The body responds with inflammation, and the immune system releases histamine and other mediators that drive the itching.

The reaction is often delayed. A person or animal may not feel anything for hours after the mite attaches. By the time itching starts, the larva may have already fed and dropped off. This delay is why people often discover bites after being outdoors rather than during exposure.

In a study of Jersey cows, skin samples showed eosinophilic dermatitis, an inflammatory pattern consistent with Trombiculidae bites. The clinical signs included patchy alopecia with crusted papules and were partly attributed to self-trauma from scratching [9]. That finding applies broadly to pets. The bite itself causes inflammation, and scratching makes it worse.

How Chiggers Find a Host

Chigger larvae do not jump or fly. They climb onto vegetation or soil surfaces and wait. When a warm-blooded host brushes past, the larva attaches. This behavior is called questing.

Larvae are active during specific seasons. In Japan, N. nagayoi was found only in August and September [2]. In South Africa, L. subquadratum larvae were collected annually during summer months over a six to seven year period [12]. In France, eosinophilic dermatitis in cows was sampled in mid-October and resolved by December [9]. In Spain, hunting dogs were infested in fall [13].

These seasonal patterns mean that prevention should be timed to local mite activity. A veterinarian familiar with your region can advise when risk is highest.

Prevention

Prevention focuses on keeping larvae off the skin and reducing exposure to infested areas.

For Pets

Monthly parasiticides can control trombiculid infestations. In a study of 18 dogs and three cats infested with Trombicula autumnalis, monthly treatment with a 0.25 percent fipronil pump spray applied to the whole body, with emphasis on the feet, face, ears, perineum, and tail, controlled trombiculids in 15 dogs. No adverse effects were seen. Residual activity lasted 14 to 30 days. In three cats, treatment was initially effective but generalized infestations recurred after seven to 10 days [14].

This study supports fipronil as a safe and effective option for dogs. The authors noted that further studies are needed to examine the apparent short duration of efficacy in cats [14]. For cats, discuss product selection with a veterinarian, because not all dog products are safe for cats.

Other acaricides may also be effective. The key point is to treat the whole body, not just visible lesions, and to repeat treatment according to the product label and veterinary advice.

For People

Permethrin-treated clothing is a standard preventive measure for people in chigger-endemic areas. Treating clothing, socks, and boots with permethrin reduces the chance that larvae attach. Repellents containing DEET or picaridin applied to exposed skin also help.

Additional steps that reduce risk:

  • Wear long pants tucked into socks or boots.
  • Avoid walking through tall grass, brush, and leaf litter in peak season.
  • Shower and change clothes soon after returning indoors.
  • Wash clothing in hot water to remove any larvae.
  • Check pets for tiny orange dots after outdoor activity.

Permethrin should not be applied directly to skin. Follow label instructions for clothing treatment.

Treatment of Chigger Bites

Treatment has two goals: relieve itching and prevent secondary infection.

Topical Antipruritics

Calamine lotion, colloidal oatmeal baths, and cool compresses can soothe irritated skin. For pets, topical antipruritic products formulated for animals can reduce discomfort. Do not use human products on pets without veterinary guidance, because some ingredients are toxic to cats and dogs.

Antihistamines

Oral antihistamines can reduce itching in people. For pets, antihistamines are sometimes prescribed by veterinarians, but the evidence for their effectiveness in chigger dermatitis is limited. A veterinarian can advise whether an antihistamine is appropriate and at what dose.

Corticosteroids

In severe cases with marked inflammation, a veterinarian may prescribe a short course of corticosteroids. This is a decision for the clinician, not something to start at home.

Antibiotics

If scratching leads to a bacterial skin infection, antibiotics may be needed. Signs of infection include increasing redness, swelling, warmth, pus, or a foul odor. Contact a veterinarian if these appear.

What Not to Do

Do not apply nail polish, petroleum jelly, or alcohol to chigger bites. These do not kill the mite and can irritate the skin. Do not try to dig a mite out of the skin. The mite is not burrowed in.

Chigger-Borne Disease

Most chigger bites in the United States cause itching and nothing more. In other parts of the world, some trombiculid species transmit Orientia tsutsugamushi, the bacterium that causes scrub typhus. Leptotrombidium species are the main vectors, and scrub typhus affects more than one million people annually [1]. The average fatality rate is about 6 percent without treatment [7].

Scrub typhus is not a concern for most US pet owners. It is relevant mainly to travelers and to people living in endemic regions of Asia and the Pacific. In one study, unfed larvae including N. nagayoi collected from soil in Japan did not carry O. tsutsugamushi [2].

Some trombiculid species may carry other pathogens. N. autumnalis is a possible vector of Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato [11]. The role of chiggers in transmitting these bacteria to pets is not fully understood.

What Is Still Uncertain

Chigger taxonomy is a moving target. Many cases in European veterinary practice are labeled Neotrombicula autumnalis by default, but morphological examination often reveals other species. Ericotrombidium ibericense was only recently reported in dogs, and E. geloti was reported as a cause of canine trombiculiasis in Crimea [5]. The diversity of chiggers affecting pets in Europe is considered greatly underestimated [5].

The systemic illness associated with N. inopinata in hunting dogs is also poorly understood. Whether the signs result from a severe allergic response to salivary proteins, a direct effect of large numbers of feeding mites, or another mechanism is not known [13]. The similarity between this syndrome and seasonal canine illness suggests a possible link, but more research is needed.

Treatment duration and optimal protocols for cats are not well established. The fipronil study found that cats relapsed after seven to 10 days, and the authors called for further studies [14]. Until more data are available, cat owners should work closely with a veterinarian to monitor and adjust treatment.

Limitations and When to Contact a Veterinarian

Individual cases vary. A veterinarian who examines your pet can confirm the diagnosis and rule out other causes of itchy skin.

Contact a veterinarian if:

  • Your pet has severe itching that interferes with eating, sleeping, or normal activity.
  • Skin lesions are spreading, worsening, or not improving after a few days.
  • You see signs of infection: pus, increasing redness, swelling, warmth, or a bad odor.
