Mean Arterial Pressure Calculator (MAP)

MAP and pulse pressure from systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

MAP = diastolic + (systolic − diastolic) ÷ 3. For a blood pressure of 120/80, MAP = 80 + 40 ÷ 3 = 93 mmHg. Normal MAP is about 70–100 mmHg.

How to use it

  1. Enter systolic and diastolic blood pressure in mmHg.
  2. Read MAP, pulse pressure and the interpretation.

What you enter

What you get

Formula

MAP = DBP + (SBP − DBP) ÷ 3 | Pulse pressure = SBP − DBP

Worked example

Input: BP 120/80 mmHg

Result: MAP 93 mmHg, pulse pressure 40 mmHg

Normal perfusion pressure.

Questions

What is a normal mean arterial pressure?

About 70–100 mmHg. Below 60–65 mmHg, organs such as the kidneys and brain may not get enough blood.

Why is MAP not just the average of systolic and diastolic?

At normal heart rates the heart spends about two-thirds of each beat in diastole, so MAP is weighted toward diastolic pressure.

What MAP is the target in sepsis?

Surviving Sepsis Campaign guidelines recommend an initial target of 65 mmHg in septic shock needing vasopressors.

What is pulse pressure?

Systolic minus diastolic. Normal is about 40 mmHg; a wide pulse pressure over 60 mmHg in older adults suggests stiff arteries.
