Body Regions: Anatomical Terminology Guide

A body region is a named, bounded area of the animal body that contains a defined set of structures, and directional terms are the words that describe where one structure sits relative to another. Two notes on this table. First, the thoracic and abdominal cavities are separated by the diaphragm, which is the muscular partition that defines the caudal boundary of the thorax and the cranial boundary of the abdomen. Second, the pelvic region overlaps anatomically with the caudal abdomen, but the pelvic inlet is the conventional dividing line.
Cephalic Region
The cephalic region is the head. Its boundaries are the rostral tip of the skull and the caudal limit at the atlanto-occipital joint, the articulation between the skull and the first cervical vertebra. Contents include the cranial cavity and brain, the orbits and eyes, the external ear, the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, the oral cavity and tongue, the teeth, and the muscles of mastication and facial expression.
The cephalic region is subdivided further in clinical use. These subdivisions matter because a finding in the "head" is too vague to act on, while a finding in the "left temporal region" is specific.
Cervical Region
The cervical region is the neck. It runs from the atlanto-occipital joint to the cranial opening of the thorax, marked by the first rib and the manubrium of the sternum. Contents include the seven cervical vertebrae (this number is constant in nearly all domestic mammals), the cervical spinal cord, the trachea, the esophagus, the carotid arteries and jugular veins, the thyroid gland, and the cervical musculature.
The cervical region is clinically important because it is the site of venipuncture in many species, the site of esophageal obstruction, and the region where cervical spinal cord lesions produce characteristic neurological signs. Thoracic Region
The thoracic region is the chest. It extends from the cranial thoracic aperture to the diaphragm. Contents include the thoracic vertebrae, ribs, sternum, heart and pericardium, lungs and pleural cavities, esophagus, trachea and bronchi, aorta, caudal vena cava, and thymus (which is prominent in young animals and involutes with age).
The thoracic region is bounded cranially by the thoracic inlet, a bony ring formed by the first thoracic vertebra, the first pair of ribs, and the manubrium. This inlet is a surgical landmark because structures passing between the neck and the chest must traverse it. The diaphragm forms the caudal boundary and is the principal muscle of inspiration.
Abdominal Region
The abdominal region is the belly. It runs from the diaphragm to the pelvic inlet. Contents include the lumbar vertebrae, the abdominal aorta and caudal vena cava, the stomach, small and large intestines, liver, gallbladder (absent in the horse), spleen, pancreas, kidneys, adrenal glands, and the abdominal wall musculature.
The abdominal region is often divided into cranial, middle, and caudal portions, and further into dorsal and ventral zones. These divisions are used to localize pain, masses, and surgical approaches. The abdominal cavity is lined by peritoneum, and the organs are either intraperitoneal or retroperitoneal depending on their embryological development.
Pelvic Region
The pelvic region is the rear of the trunk. It extends from the pelvic inlet to the caudal end of the pelvis. Contents include the pelvic bones (ilium, ischium, pubis), the rectum and anal canal, the urogenital organs (bladder, urethra, and in females the uterus, cervix, and vagina, in males the prostate and accessory glands), the pelvic diaphragm, and the internal iliac vessels and their branches.
The pelvic region is the site of parturition, rectal examination, and many urogenital procedures. In the horse, the pelvic canal is relatively narrow, and foaling requires coordinated rotation and expulsion of the foal. In the dog and cat, the pelvic canal is wider and the pelvic symphysis is less rigid, which affects fracture management.
Thoracic Limb
The thoracic limb is the front leg. It extends from the pectoral girdle to the digits. The pectoral girdle in domestic mammals is reduced compared to humans: the clavicle is absent or vestigial in most species, and the scapula attaches to the trunk by muscle rather than by a bony joint. Contents include the scapula, humerus, radius, ulna, carpal bones, metacarpal bones, phalanges, and the associated muscles, tendons, nerves, and vessels.
The thoracic limb is divided into the shoulder region (scapula and proximal humerus), brachium or arm (humerus), antebrachium or forearm (radius and ulna), carpus or wrist, metacarpus, and digits. In the horse, the thoracic limb is specialized for speed and the digits are reduced to a single functional digit (the third), with the others vestigial.
Pelvic Limb
The pelvic limb is the rear leg. It extends from the pelvic girdle to the digits. Contents include the pelvis, femur, tibia, fibula, tarsal bones, metatarsal bones, phalanges, and the associated muscles, tendons, nerves, and vessels.
The pelvic limb is divided into the gluteal region (pelvis and proximal femur), thigh (femur), crus or leg (tibia and fibula), tarsus or hock, metatarsus, and digits. The pelvic limb transmits propulsive force from the trunk to the ground and is the site of the stifle (knee) joint, the hock, and the common calcanean tendon (Achilles tendon).
Directional Terms: The Vocabulary of Position
Directional terms describe position relative to the body's anatomical position. In veterinary anatomy, the anatomical position is the standing posture with the head facing forward, the limbs extended, and the body in a neutral stance. All directional terms are defined relative to this position.
Cranial and Caudal
Cranial means toward the head. Caudal means toward the tail. These terms replace the human terms superior and inferior for structures on the trunk and head. For example, the heart is cranial to the diaphragm, and the stomach is caudal to the diaphragm.
In the head, a separate pair of terms is used. Rostral means toward the nose, and caudal means toward the tail. The term rostral is used because the head has its own axis. For example, the eyes are rostral to the ears, and the occipital bone is caudal to the parietal bone.
Dorsal and Ventral
Dorsal means toward the back or upper surface. Ventral means toward the belly or lower surface. These terms replace the human terms posterior and anterior for structures on the trunk. For example, the spinal cord is dorsal to the vertebral bodies, and the sternum is ventral to the heart.
On the limbs, dorsal and ventral are replaced by more specific terms. On the thoracic limb, the dorsal surface of the paw is the upper surface, and the palmar surface is the lower surface. On the pelvic limb, the dorsal surface of the paw is the upper surface, and the plantar surface is the lower surface.
Proximal and Distal
Proximal means closer to the point of attachment or to the trunk. Distal means farther from the point of attachment or from the trunk. These terms are used almost exclusively for the limbs. For example, the humerus is proximal to the radius, and the phalanges are distal to the metacarpals.
In the horse, the term "proximal" and "distal" are used extensively in lameness diagnosis. A proximal suspensory desmitis is an injury near the origin of the suspensory ligament, while a distal sesamoidean ligament injury is farther down the limb.
Medial and Lateral
Medial means toward the midline of the body. Lateral means away from the midline. These terms apply to all regions. For example, the medial aspect of the femur faces the opposite limb, and the lateral aspect faces outward. The medial collateral ligament of the stifle is on the inside of the joint, and the lateral collateral ligament is on the outside.
Two related terms are worth knowing. Ipsilateral means on the same side of the body. Contralateral means on the opposite side. These are used in neurological examination to describe deficits. For example, a lesion in the left cerebral hemisphere may cause contralateral proprioceptive deficits.
Superficial and Deep
Superficial means closer to the body surface. Deep means farther from the body surface. These terms describe depth relative to the skin. For example, the superficial digital flexor tendon lies just under the skin, while the deep digital flexor tendon lies deeper, against the bone.
The Human Versus Veterinary Trap
This is the single most common source of confusion for students moving between human and veterinary anatomy. Human anatomy uses superior and inferior to describe position along the vertical axis, and anterior and posterior to describe position along the front-to-back axis. Veterinary anatomy uses cranial and caudal for the head-to-tail axis, and dorsal and ventral for the back-to-belly axis.
The trap is that the words look interchangeable but are not. In a standing human, "anterior" means toward the front of the body, which is the same direction as "ventral" in a quadruped. But in a quadruped, the front of the body is the head end, so "anterior" would be ambiguous. Veterinary anatomy avoids this by using cranial and caudal for the long axis and dorsal and ventral for the perpendicular axis.
A second trap is the use of "superior" and "inferior" in veterinary contexts. These terms are not part of the NAV standard for domestic mammals. If you use them, you risk being misunderstood. Use cranial and caudal, dorsal and ventral.
A third trap is the use of "anterior" and "posterior" for the limbs. In human anatomy, the upper limb has an anterior surface (the palm side) and a posterior surface (the back of the hand). How Regions and Directions Are Used in Practice
In a clinical examination, you start with a region and then localize within it. For example, you might note "a 2 cm firm mass in the left cervical region, midway between the mandible and the thoracic inlet, mobile and non-painful." That description uses the cervical region as the frame and then adds directional and descriptive detail.
In surgery, the regional approach determines the incision. A cranial abdominal approach enters the abdomen cranial to the umbilicus and is used for gastrotomy or splenectomy. A caudal abdominal approach enters caudal to the umbilicus and is used for cystotomy or ovariohysterectomy. The regional boundaries guide the surgeon's hand.
In radiology, the region determines the projection. A thoracic radiograph is centered on the thorax, with the cranial boundary at the thoracic inlet and the caudal boundary at the diaphragm. An abdominal radiograph is centered on the abdomen, with the cranial boundary at the diaphragm and the caudal boundary at the pelvic inlet. Knowing the boundaries prevents cutting off the region of interest.
In anatomy teaching, regions are the organizing principle. A dissection guide will typically start with the cephalic region, then the cervical region, then the thoracic limb, then the thorax, then the abdomen, then the pelvic limb, then the pelvis. This sequence follows the body's own organization and builds a mental map that students can use in practice.
The NAV standardizes these terms across species, which means a term like "cranial" means the same thing in a dog, a horse, a cow, and a cat. This is essential for comparative anatomy and for cross-species clinical work. A veterinarian who treats multiple species does not need to learn a new directional vocabulary for each one.

The common mistakes are predictable. Students use superior and inferior instead of cranial and caudal. They use anterior and posterior instead of dorsal and ventral. They use proximal and distal for the trunk instead of the limbs. They use medial and lateral without specifying the reference point. They confuse rostral and cranial on the head. They forget that the anatomical position is the standing posture, not a recumbent one.
