Sales Tax Calculator

Add sales tax to a price or work back from a tax-inclusive total, with state base rates.

Tax = price × rate, and total = price × (1 + rate). $100 at 7.25% sales tax is $7.25 tax, $107.25 total. To remove tax, divide the total by (1 + rate): $107.25 ÷ 1.0725 = $100.

Questions

How do I calculate sales tax?

Convert the rate to a decimal and multiply by the price. 8% of $45 is 0.08 × 45 = $3.60.

How do I find the price before tax?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. A $54 total at 8% is 54 ÷ 1.08 = $50 before tax.

Which states have no sales tax?

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax, although some Alaska towns charge local tax.

Why is my receipt rate higher than the state rate?

Counties, cities and special districts add local taxes on top of the state rate. Enter the combined rate for your location.
