Mean, Median & Mode Calculator
Find the mean, median and mode of any data set instantly, with range, quartiles, standard deviation and the sorted list alongside.
The Mean, Median & Mode Calculator returns the arithmetic mean (Σx/n), the median (middle value of the sorted data, or the average of the two middle values) and the mode (most frequent value or values), plus range, quartiles and standard deviation.
Free, runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded.
How to use it
- Paste numbers.
- Read mean, median and mode.
- Copy results.
What you enter
- A list of numbers
What you get
- Mean
- Median
- Mode(s)
- Range, quartiles, SD
Formula
Mean = Σx / n | Median = middle of sorted values | Mode = most frequent value
The mean is pulled by extreme values; the median is not, which is why it is preferred for skewed data. A data set can have no mode, one mode or several.
Worked example
Input: 3 7 7 2 9 4 7 5
Result: Mean 5.5 · Median 6 · Mode 7 · Range 7
Sorted: 2 3 4 5 7 7 7 9. Middle values 5 and 7 average to 6; 7 appears three times.
Questions
When should I report the median instead of the mean?
When the data are skewed or contain outliers (e.g. reaction times, costs, viral loads), the median with the interquartile range describes the typical value better than the mean with SD.
What if there are two modes?
The data set is bimodal; the calculator lists every value that ties for the highest frequency.
Limitations
- Mode is not meaningful for continuous data with no repeated values.
