Density Calculator

Solve for density, mass or volume in g/mL, kg/m³ or lb/ft³, with common material densities.

Density = mass ÷ volume. 250 g of a liquid filling 200 mL has a density of 250 ÷ 200 = 1.25 g/mL, which is 1,250 kg/m³ and denser than water, so it sinks.

How to use it

  1. Choose whether to solve for density, mass or volume.
  2. Enter the other two values and pick their units, or tap a material for its density.
  3. Read the answer in metric and US units.

What you get

Formula

ρ = m / V

Worked example: ethanol

Input: Density 0.789 g/mL, volume 200 mL

Result: Mass 157.8 g

Ethanol is lighter than the same volume of water (200 g).

Questions

What is the formula for density?

ρ = m ÷ V. Rearranged, mass = density × volume and volume = mass ÷ density.

What units is density in?

Lab work uses g/mL or g/cm³ (the same), engineering uses kg/m³ (1 g/mL = 1,000 kg/m³) and US practice often uses lb/ft³ (1 g/mL = 62.43 lb/ft³).

How do I find the density of an irregular object?

Weigh it, then lower it into a graduated cylinder of water; the rise in water level is its volume. Divide mass by that volume.

Will it float?

An object floats in water if its average density is below 1.0 g/mL (about 1.025 in seawater).
