Why the Doses Are Not Interchangeable
A 0.2 mg/kg dose is a standard canine perioperative dose. The same 0.2 mg/kg dose in a cat is used only as a single Day 1 injection, followed by a much lower 0.05 mg/kg oral dose [2]. Giving a cat the canine maintenance dose repeatedly can cause serious harm. Meloxicam has a narrow safety margin. Accidental overdose is a genuine emergency, and the outcome depends on how much was given, how the drug was administered, and how quickly treatment starts.
A published case report describes a 6-month-old female Bulldog that received an accidental 1 mg/kg intravenous dose of meloxicam after a routine laparoscopic ovariectomy. That is five times the standard 0.2 mg/kg canine dose. The dog was treated with supportive medical therapy and therapeutic plasma exchange over 210 minutes, achieving 1.2 plasma volume exchanges.
