What Are Dog Lice?

The Three Lice Species That Infest Dogs

Linognathus setosus is the sucking louse of dogs. It belongs to the order Anoplura, the blood-feeding lice. A case report from Turkey described L. setosus on a 2-year-old male Rottweiler that presented for restlessness and itching, with lice concentrated on the head, neck, and back [3]. Sucking lice take blood meals, and heavy infestations can contribute to anemia, especially in puppies or debilitated dogs.

Trichodectes canis is the biting louse, also called the chewing louse. It belongs to the order Mallophaga. It feeds on skin scales and hair rather than blood. T. canis is considered highly specific to domestic and wild canids, though a 2026 report documented it on a domestic cat in Nicaragua, which was described as a new host record and an unusual finding [4]. This species has an added significance: it can act as an intermediate host for the tapeworm Dipylidium caninum. A dog that swallows an infected louse during grooming can develop a tapeworm infection.

Heterodoxus spiniger is a chewing louse found in some regions, particularly warmer climates. It infests a diverse range of hosts, primarily carnivores, and domestic dogs are considered a major host. Infestations can cause pruritus, hair loss, or seborrhea [5]. This species is less common than T. canis in most of North America and Europe but is relevant in tropical and subtropical areas.

A 2025 study from Uzbekistan identified T. canis and L. setosus relatives on dogs and reported the first detection of Linognathus africanus on dogs worldwide, showing that louse taxonomy and host range continue to be refined [6]. For practical purposes, owners and veterinarians focus on the three species above.

Can Dogs Get Lice From Humans?

No. Dogs cannot get lice from humans, and humans cannot get lice from dogs. This is one of the most common misconceptions owners bring to the clinic.

Human lice are host-specific in the same way dog lice are. Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) and body lice (Pediculus humanus humanus) feed on human blood and are adapted to human hair and skin. How Do Dogs Get Lice?

Transmission happens through direct contact and through shared items. Lice do not fly or jump, so they need physical proximity or a contaminated object to move between dogs.

Direct Dog-to-Dog Contact

The most common route is nose-to-nose or body-to-body contact between an infested dog and a susceptible dog. This is why lice spread quickly in kennels, shelters, breeding facilities, dog parks, and multi-dog households. A study of dogs in Uzbekistan collected lice from 77 dogs across five regions, demonstrating how readily these parasites move through dog populations that have frequent contact [6].

Fomites: Shared Bedding, Brushes, and Grooming Tools

Fomites are objects that carry parasites from one host to another. Shared bedding, blankets, brushes, combs, collars, and grooming clippers can all carry lice or nits. Because lice glue their eggs to hair shafts, a brush that removes hair from an infested dog can carry nits to the next dog.

Lice do not survive long off the host. They cannot feed, they dehydrate, and they die within a short time. This limits how far they spread through the environment, but it does not eliminate the risk from items used immediately after contact with an infested dog. Cleaning and replacing shared items is a sensible part of treatment.

Who Is Most at Risk?

Lice are more common in dogs that have frequent contact with other dogs, especially in group housing. What Are the Signs of Lice on Dogs?

The clinical signs of lice overlap with many other skin conditions, so diagnosis requires a hands-on examination. The most consistent signs are itching, restlessness, and visible parasites or nits.

Itching and Restlessness

Pruritus is the most common complaint. A case report of L. setosus infestation described a dog presenting with restlessness and itching, with lice found on the head, neck, and back [3]. A field trial of imidacloprid noted that the constant pruritus caused by lice persisted for up to 2 to 4 weeks after treatment even when no lice remained, because the skin needed time to recover [8]. Owners should expect itching to improve gradually rather than disappear overnight.

Hair Loss and Skin Changes

Heavy infestations can cause alopecia, scaling, and seborrhea. A study of H. spiniger in dogs noted pruritus, hair loss, and seborrhea as the main clinical signs [5]. Visible Lice and Nits

How Are Dog Lice Diagnosed?

Diagnosis is straightforward and does not require advanced testing. A veterinarian confirms lice by finding live lice or nits on the dog.

Coat Parting and Visual Examination

The standard technique is coat parting. The examiner parts the hair at multiple predetermined sites and counts live lice and nits. This method was used in clinical trials to measure treatment efficacy, with researchers examining 38 hair coat-partings per dog in one study [9] and pre-specified locations in another [10]. A whole-body comb count can be added for a more thorough assessment [9][11].

Species Identification

In most cases, identifying the exact species is not necessary for treatment, because the approved products are effective against both sucking and biting lice. When species identification is needed, lice are collected and examined microscopically. A case report described preserving lice in 70 percent ethanol, clearing them in potassium hydroxide, and mounting them on slides for identification [3]. This level of detail is usually reserved for research or unusual cases.

Ruling Out Other Conditions

Lice can be confused with fleas, cheyletiella mites, or severe dandruff. Fleas jump and are usually darker and more mobile. Cheyletiella mites are microscopic and cause a different pattern of scaling. A veterinarian can distinguish these with a skin scraping, a flea comb, or a simple visual inspection. If the diagnosis is unclear, further testing may be needed.

How Are Lice on Dogs Treated?

Treatment is effective and well studied. Several products have been shown to eliminate lice in clinical trials, and the choice depends on the dog's health, age, and the veterinarian's assessment.

Isoxazolines

Isoxazolines are a class of oral and topical parasiticides that have become a mainstay of flea and tick control. They are also effective against lice.

Afoxolaner was evaluated in a field study of 43 dogs naturally infested with T. canis in Romania. At day 14, no living lice were detected in either the afoxolaner group or the control group treated with fipronil and (S)-methoprene. Dead lice were found in four dogs in the afoxolaner group, and eggs were present in two dogs in that group and one dog in the control group. By day 30, no lice were detected in either group, though eggs remained in one control dog [7].

Fluralaner was evaluated against L. setosus in a study of privately owned dogs from 21 households. Dogs treated with fluralaner had louse count reductions of 85.7 percent at day 1, 96.8 percent at day 7, and 100 percent at days 28 and 84. No lice were seen on fluralaner-treated dogs at 28 and 84 days after treatment [10]. A separate case report described successful treatment of T. canis in a dog with a one-month fluralaner formulation. Adult lice were eliminated by 2 weeks, nits were still present at that point, and all clinical signs and evidence of infestation resolved by 4 weeks [12].

A 2025 field study in Kenya evaluated afoxolaner against H. spiniger and compared it with a topical fipronil and (S)-methoprene product. This was the first clinical trial to assess an isoxazoline against this species [5].

Topical Insecticides

Several topical products have strong evidence for lice treatment.

Selamectin applied topically was effective against L. setosus in a study of 21 dogs. At day 42, all remaining animals in both the selamectin and permethrin groups were clear of lice, with statistically significant reductions from pretreatment counts [13]. A separate study found selamectin 100 percent effective against T. canis on dogs and Felicola subrostratus on cats throughout the assessment period [11].

Fipronil formulations were tested against T. canis in laboratory and field studies. No live lice were found on dogs treated with any fipronil formulation at any post-treatment examination [9]. A novel fipronil spot-on was also confirmed to control chewing lice for at least one month [14].

Permethrin at 65 percent in a spot-on formulation eliminated T. canis from all treated dogs within 7 days, with no reinfestation from hatching eggs during the 28-day evaluation period [15]. Permethrin was also used as a comparator in the fluralaner study and achieved 99.1 percent reduction by day 28 [10].

Imidacloprid was highly effective against both L. setosus and T. canis over a 6-week trial, with efficacy lasting longer than the egg-to-adult development period of both species [8].

An imidacloprid and flumethrin collar was evaluated against T. canis among other parasites and demonstrated efficacy against the biting louse [16].

A neem seed extract preparation was tested on dogs infested with T. canis or L. setosus. A single treatment killed both motile stages and developing stages inside eggs when left on the hair for 20 minutes before rinsing [17]. This is a non-conventional option that some owners ask about.

What About Treating the Environment?

Because lice do not survive long off the host, environmental treatment is less critical than it is for fleas. Washing bedding, brushes, and grooming tools in hot water and drying them on high heat is a reasonable step. There is no need to treat yards or carpets with insecticides for lice.

Follow-Up and Recheck Timing

Most clinical trials assessed dogs at 14 and 30 days after treatment [7], or at 1, 7, 28, and 84 days [10]. A practical recheck schedule is 2 weeks after treatment to confirm adult lice are gone, and 4 weeks after treatment to confirm nits and clinical signs have resolved. Some products provide residual activity that prevents reinfestation for weeks to months, depending on the formulation.

How to Check Your Dog for Lice at Home

A simple home check can help you decide whether to call your veterinarian.

  1. Find a well-lit area. Natural daylight or a bright lamp works best.
  2. Part the hair in several places along the head, neck, back, and tail base.
  3. Look at the skin and the hair shafts near the roots.
  4. Adult lice are small, flat, and slow-moving. They range from pale to reddish-brown.
  5. Nits are tiny oval specks glued to hair shafts. They do not flake off like dandruff.
  6. Use a fine-toothed flea comb to gather hair and debris from multiple areas.
  7. If you find lice or nits, contact your veterinarian for confirmation and treatment.

Do not assume that finding one louse means a mild infestation. Lice reproduce on the host, and numbers can build quickly. Early treatment is easier and more comfortable for the dog.

How Do You Prevent Lice on Dogs?

Prevention focuses on reducing contact with infested dogs and avoiding shared items.

  • Keep your dog away from dogs with known lice infestations until they are treated.
  • Do not share bedding, brushes, or grooming tools between dogs unless they have been cleaned.
  • If you board your dog, ask about the facility's parasite screening and cleaning protocols.
  • Treat all dogs in a multi-dog household at the same time if one is diagnosed with lice.
  • Check newly adopted or rescued dogs for lice before introducing them to other pets.

What Is Still Uncertain About Canine Lice?

Several questions remain open.

The full geographic range of H. spiniger and its importance relative to T. canis is not well defined in all regions. The 2025 Kenyan study was described as the first clinical trial of an isoxazoline against this species [5], which means treatment evidence is still building.

The role of lice as vectors of pathogens is an active area of research. A 2025 study from Uzbekistan detected Rickettsia species in lice collected from dogs, including Rickettsia asembonensis, Rickettsia helvetica, and Rickettsia monacensis, and found Dipylidium caninum DNA in fleas [6]. A study from China tested L. setosus collected from dogs and did not detect Anaplasma, Dirofilaria immitis, or Leishmania species in those lice [18]. These findings suggest that lice may carry pathogens, but the clinical significance for dogs is not fully established.

The optimal treatment duration and the role of environmental decontamination are also not standardized. Most products are effective with a single dose or a short course, but recheck timing varies by product and by the individual dog.
