What is the difference between the at-home kit and the patient service center?
The at-home kit uses capillary blood collected by a fingerprick that you perform yourself. The patient service center uses venipuncture performed by a trained phlebotomist. The patient service center pathway has lower pre-analytical risk because the collection is performed by a professional.
How do I collect a capillary blood sample at home?
Wash your hands with warm soapy water and dry them completely. Prick the side of your fingertip with the lancet, wipe away the first drop of blood, and fill the collection tube to the marked line. Invert the tube the specified number of times, place it in the biohazard bag, and ship it on the same day.
What happens if my sample is rejected by the laboratory?
The laboratory will notify you if your sample is rejected due to hemolysis, clotting, underfilling, or improper packaging. You will typically be offered a replacement kit or the option to visit a patient service center for a new collection.
How do I interpret my results?
Compare your result to the reference range printed on the report. A result outside the range is flagged as high or low. A flag does not mean you have a disease. Consider the pre-analytical variables, such as fasting status and collection quality, and share the report with a clinician for interpretation in your full health context.
Can I use Labcorp On Demand results for a medical diagnosis?
No. Laboratory results are data that require clinical interpretation. A diagnosis requires correlation with your medical history, physical examination, and often additional testing. You should share your results with a clinician who can interpret them in context.
Are at-home capillary samples as reliable as venous blood samples?
For certain analytes, capillary samples have been shown to correlate well with venous samples. A study of Alzheimer's disease biomarkers found that self-administered fingerprick tests produced results that correlated with venous blood and with cognitive function. However, not all tests are validated for capillary collection, and the reliability depends on your collection technique.
What should I do if I have symptoms that concern me?
If you have symptoms that suggest a medical emergency, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headache, or weakness on one side of the body, seek emergency care immediately. Do not wait for laboratory results to decide whether to seek care.
