Generate Biomedicines Uses Anthropic’s Claude to Shrink CAR-T Cell Engines
By Dr. Zubair Khalid, DVM, MS, PhD ·

Generate Biomedicines, a Flagship-founded biotechnology company, has used Anthropic’s Claude AI platform to reduce the size of CAR-T cell engines. The company’s CEO described the result as a “huge opportunity” for the use of AI tools in drug development.
CAR-T cell therapy involves extracting a patient’s T cells, engineering them to recognize cancer, and infusing them back into the body. The “engine” refers to the genetic machinery that directs the engineered cells to attack tumors. A smaller engine is generally easier to manufacture and deliver.
The work extends Anthropic’s presence in biological research. Claude, a large language model, was used by Generate to assist in the design or optimization of the cell therapy components. The company has not disclosed specific technical details or clinical data from the project.
Context
AI tools are increasingly used in biotech to design proteins, predict molecular behavior, and streamline experimental workflows. Applying such tools to cell therapy manufacturing could help reduce production costs and improve scalability, which are major barriers to broad patient access. Smaller CAR-T constructs may also improve the ability of engineered cells to penetrate solid tumors, a current limitation of the therapy. The work by Generate represents another example of AI being integrated directly into the therapeutic development pipeline.
