AstraZeneca Offers $10 Billion to Acquire Rhythm Pharmaceuticals; Analysts Predict Bidding War

AstraZeneca has made an offer of roughly $10 billion to acquire Rhythm Pharmaceuticals, a company focused on rare obesity disorders, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. The bid was confirmed by sources familiar with the matter.
At least three analyst teams are now speculating that a bidding war could develop. They suggest Rhythm is unlikely to accept AstraZeneca’s current proposal and may attract competing offers from other pharmaceutical companies.
Rhythm Pharmaceuticals is best known for its drug setmelanotide (sold as Imcivree), which treats obesity caused by rare genetic mutations such as POMC and LEPR deficiencies. These conditions affect a small patient population but represent a well-defined genetic pathway in weight regulation.
Why this matters for biotech: The potential acquisition highlights growing pharmaceutical interest in obesity treatments, even for niche genetic forms. AstraZeneca, which has been expanding its metabolic disease portfolio, would gain access to a rare-disease sales infrastructure and a validated melanocortin-4 receptor agonist platform. If a bidding war materializes, it could set a new valuation benchmark for rare-disease obesity assets and draw further investment into genetically defined metabolic disorders.
