Kailera’s Oral GLP-1 Drug Meets Primary Endpoints in Chinese Phase 3 Obesity and Diabetes Trials
Kailera Therapeutics has announced that its oral GLP-1 receptor agonist achieved its primary endpoints in Phase 3 clinical trials for obesity and type 2 diabetes conducted in China. The trials reported an average 11% weight loss among participants. The positive results position Kailera’s partner, Hengrui Pharma, to file for regulatory approval in China for both indications.
The drug is an oral formulation of a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, a class of therapies that mimic a natural hormone to regulate blood sugar and appetite. The Phase 3 data support the asset’s efficacy in weight reduction and glycemic control.
GLP-1 receptor agonists have become a cornerstone of metabolic disease treatment, with injectable versions widely used. An effective oral option could improve patient adherence by eliminating the need for injections. The successful Chinese trials mark a step toward bringing an oral GLP-1 therapy to a large patient population. Advances in oral peptide delivery also have broader implications for the development of other biologic drugs that are traditionally administered by injection.
